Jek Pui’s Legendary Thai Curry and Rice in Bangkok You Can’t Miss

Picture this. You’re wandering through the hot, busy streets of Bangkok. You turn down a small alley, stumbling upon a line-up of people waiting for some mystery street food. You inch closer, curious what all the fuss is about.

No tables.

No chairs.

Just hungry customers perched upon red plastic stools, gobbling down an incredible-smelling bowl of khao gaeng, Thai curry and rice. Where in all the glorious Thai street food have you ended up? You’ve made it to Khao Gaeng Jek Pui ข้าวแกงเจ็กปุ๊ย (เจ๊เฉีย), a legendary spot that serves up one of the best Thai curries you’ll eat in Bangkok.

What is khao gaeng?

If there’s one dish you’ve just gotta have on any visit to Bangkok, or Thailand for that matter, it’s curry.

Khao gaeng ข้าวแกง is Thai for curry and rice. It’s one of the four categories of Thai cuisine and an absolute street food staple. At its core, Thai curry consists of coconut milk, a protein, veggies or fruit, and aromatic herbs.

Rich with aromatic herbs and spices, Thai curry has to be our favourite kind of curry!

The base of any gaeng is the curry paste itself. A combination of chillies, garlic, lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime, cilantro, shallots, Thai basil, coriander, cumin seeds, and shrimp paste are ground up together to create this. The cherry on top of any Thai curry is the coconut milk; nothing beats its rich, creamy smoothness.

What sets Thai curry apart from other curries around the world is the use of fresh ingredients. Herbs and aromatic leaves are used instead of a mix of dried spices.

Khao gaeng is the ideal example of balanced Thai cuisine. The combined tastes of spicy, sweet, sour and salty are all perfectly blended together.

In Thailand, you can’t have curry without rice

As the name suggests, khao gaeng is traditionally served over rice. Jasmine rice is the go-to, perfect for soaking up the creamy, spicy, savoury curry poured all over it.

As one of the most famous and popular Thailand street foods, you might wonder what’s the best way to eat your Thai curry rice in Bangkok? Well, from a busy local vendor right on the street, of course!

When it comes to khao gaeng, Jek Pui Curry is the epitome of Thai street food.

All the options at Jek Pui

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive, apart from the incredible aroma, is the insanely massive pots full of freshly made curry.

There are usually three different curries to choose from. These are most often a yellow curry with pork, red curry with beef and green curry with chicken. The most popular is the yellow curry with pork, and is therefore usually a part of the daily rotation.

All the curries served at Jek Pui Curry are Bangkok style, meaning they’re quite mild in spiciness, but no less so in flavour. This is compared to other parts of Thailand, mind you, where the food is much spicier and more intense. These mild curries are a perfect example of Bangkok’s Thai curry and rice street-food culture—rich with flavour but approachable for all spice levels.

Along the table, you’ll find sides to go with your curry, which we highly recommend. On offer is kun chiang (sweet and fatty Chinese sausage กุนเชียง), kai palo (five-spice stewed egg ไข่พะโล้), and seekong moo ob (baked pork ribs ซี่โครงหมูอบ). You really can’t go wrong with any option. Each one adds their own dimension to the dish, so you could even go crazy and get them all!

Why Jek Pui has some of the best Thai curry in Bangkok

Aside from the amazing taste, Khao Gaeng Jake Pui has some of the most affordable curry in Bangkok. At ฿50/plate, it’s great value for both the amount and quality of curry you get.

Each curry is cooked up fresh, from scratch every morning. This is quite a time consuming and labour intensive process, which is why so few places still do this nowadays.

At Jake Pui, they put love and the highest quality ingredients into their curries, creating the kind of dish that’s become a staple in Bangkok. Here, you know you’re getting a local, homemade curry for a local price. Affordable and great quality, what more could you ask for in the perfect street food?

Musical chair curry, anyone? The vibe at Jek Pui

Khao Gaeng Jek Pui embodies Thai street food, with massive pots of curry sitting on street-side tables down a small soi (alley). The area is always bustling with people looking to get their taste of Bangkok.

Set along this side of the building is about two dozen, small, red plastic stools. Perched atop them will be people sitting with their bowls of rice and curry, poised precariously on their laps.

When it gets really busy and there’s nowhere to sit, people stand near the stools waiting to snatch one up as soon as it becomes available. This kind of red plastic stool dance is how Jek Pui got its nickname of ‘curry musical chairs’. If you’ve ever played the game, this is exactly what it feels like!

Once you’ve sat down on an available stool, someone will come round to take your order. The stools make for fairly quick and easy eating, no tables required. Just sit down with your curry on your lap, eat and move on.

Jek Pui Bangkok Chinatown opens at 2:00pm and sells out every day. Yes, it’s that busy! Running now for over 75 years, it’s made a name for itself throughout the whole of Bangkok.
