<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hidden among the lively streets of Jakarta’s Glodok Chinatown lies a true gem of Chinese-Indonesian street food. Among the buzzing stalls and the <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/24-best-thai-street-food-bangkok-thailand/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clatter of woks</a>, you’ll find one dish that locals turn to for pure comfort: <em>nasi tim</em> chicken rice. Steamy, savoury, and <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/where-to-eat-the-best-langos-in-budapest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soul-warming</a>, it’s the kind of meal that feels like a hug in food form.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What is nasi tim chicken rice?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nasi tim chicken rice is a popular Chinese-Indonesian dish that you can find throughout Jakarta, especially in the Glodok neighbourhood. It has two different layers, and the best way to describe it is as an upside-down shepherd’s pie, except you switch out the mashed potatoes for rice.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first layer is seasoned, boneless chicken that’s diced up and stir-fried with mushrooms, garlic, soy sauce, Chinese cooking wine, sesame oil and oyster sauce. The cook spoons this layer of savoury, <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/how-to-eat-khinkali/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meaty-deliciousness</a> into a small metal tin. Then, they cover it with the second layer: raw rice flavoured with salt, pepper and garlic.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They add a little bit of water and place the tins into a massive steamer. Dozens of tins steam together until the rice cooks to sticky, chewy perfection.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-1024x683.jpg" alt="Steamed nasi tim chicken rice cooking in individual metal bowls at Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi in Jakarta Chinatown" class="wp-image-2514" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Little tins pile up, ready for steaming to maximum juiciness</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How nasi tim chicken rice is served</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you order, the cook flips your individual-sized tin upside down, exposing that savoury, juicy layer of stir-fried chicken. The chicken sits on top of the fluffy rice, creating a steamy layered cake of <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/akcaabat-kofte-best-turkish-meatballs-in-turkiye/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">savoury goodness</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They then cover it with a few spoonfuls of savoury chicken oil, adding an incredible amount of umami flavour.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The last step is the proverbal cherry-on-top: a fresh raw egg yolk. The cook delicately places the yolk on the chicken layer, finishing off the dish.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-style-default"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/delicious-nasi-tim-chicken-rice-1024x683.jpg" alt="Plate of Nasi Tim chicken rice with minced chicken and raw egg yolk, served with soup and pickled veggies." class="wp-image-2512" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/delicious-nasi-tim-chicken-rice-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/delicious-nasi-tim-chicken-rice-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/delicious-nasi-tim-chicken-rice-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/delicious-nasi-tim-chicken-rice.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The finishing touches add that little extra something to an already mouthwatering dish</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We have to say, the addition of the chicken oil and egg yolk really heightens the dish. This truly turns <em>nasi tim </em>into something incredibly rich with a savoury flavour that can’t be matched.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sides to go with your nasi tim</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two popular sides often come with your <em>nasi tim. </em>One is<em> acar</em>, Indonesian pickled vegetables. You’ll also spot large jars on the table full of little pickled onions. Both sides pair perfectly with the dish, cutting through the richness with a crisp sourness and adding a welcome crunchy texture.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to eat nasi tim in Jakarta</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our go to spot for <em>nasi tim </em>is at a very modest shop in Pasar Pagi Lama. Right in the heart of Glodok Chinatown Jakarta you’ll find Nasi Tim Pasar Pagi &#8220;Ayauw&#8221;. It’ll be tucked away on the northern side of the market, closest to Jalan Pasar Pagi Lama, on the upper floor.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The shop is surrounded by book stores and paper shops on the second floor. It can be tricky to find, but the effort is totally worth it for this Jakarta <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/the-underrated-turkish-dessert-hamsikoy-sutlac-turkish-rice-pudding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">comfort food</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you’ve arrived, find yourself a spot and order up a <em>nasi tim</em>. As far as we know it’s the <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/dong-bei-dumpling-the-best-dumplings-in-binondo-manila/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">only thing on the menu</a>, so there’ll be no confusion as to what you want.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-chinese-indonesian-1024x683.jpg" alt="Man serving nasi tim chicken rice at a busy local eatery in Jakarta Chinatown" class="wp-image-2513" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-chinese-indonesian-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-chinese-indonesian-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-chinese-indonesian-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/nasi-tim-chicken-rice-jakarta-chinese-indonesian.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The best way is the local way, trust us</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Nasi tim: the ultimate Chinese-Indonesian comfort food</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This savoury steamed chicken rice, known locally as <em>nasi tim</em> chicken rice, is the ultimate comfort food in <a href="https://whattocooktoday.com/nasi-tim-ayam.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese-Indonesian</a> culture. Hearty rice sits under a generous helping of savoury stir-fried chicken and mushroom, all steamed together into the perfect savoury cake. Top it with chicken oil and a fresh raw egg yolk, and you’ve got yourself the biggest savoury hug out there. Is there any better kind?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hailing from the Black Sea town of Akçaabat, these legendary meatballs have earned <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/jek-pui-thai-curry-and-rice-bangkok/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nationwide fame</a> for being some of the most delicious in the country. Dare we even say, Türkiye’s best-kept meaty secret. Locals swear by them. Tourists fall in love at first bite. Honestly? We’re still dreaming about them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you&#8217;re a hardcore carnivore or just in it for the <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/24-best-thai-street-food-bangkok-thailand/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cultural flavours</a>, no trip to Türkiye is complete without sinking your teeth into these savoury meat patties.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wait, what even is a köfte?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Köfte</em> (pronounced kuhf-teh) are Turkish meatballs, but don’t picture your typical meatball. These are another beast. Typically made with ground beef or lamb, they’re mixed with a secret blend of spices, onions, egg, and breadcrumbs, then shaped into patties or ovals rather than balls.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They’re grilled, fried, or sometimes even cooked in sauce. When it comes to Akçaabat <em>köfte</em>, it’s all about that smoky, charcoal-grilled goodness.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A meatball for every region</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the interesting things about <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/traditional-foods-of-trabzon-gooey-kuymak-and-black-sea-hamsi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Turkish cuisine</a> is that every region has its own version of different traditional dishes. These variations even go down to the restaurants and families of the locals, each having their own special recipe. The same goes for their <em>köfte</em>. Some are spicy, some are herbal, some are melt-in-your-mouth soft, with each one different from the last.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If there’s one kind of <em>köfte</em> that consistently steals the spotlight as the best Turkish meatballs, it’s <a href="https://youtu.be/1i2zZ1_ms-4?si=WP-4Mc6r9zDkGDNN" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Akçaabat <em>köfte</em></a>. Think juicy, meaty, flavour-packed patties that are so good, you better be ready to order a second serving, one just isn’t enough!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">So, what makes Akçaabat köfte so special?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It all starts with the cows.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the rolling green hills around Akçaabat in the Trabzon region, carefully selected cows are fed a diet of fresh grass, with local herbs and salt added to their feed. This unique diet gives the meat a distinct flavour that you won’t find anywhere else, making the meat a true specialty.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/trabzon-region-best-turkish-meatball-1024x683.jpg" alt="Rolling green hills at sunset in Akçaabat, Türkiye, home of the best Turkish meatball." class="wp-image-2470" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/trabzon-region-best-turkish-meatball-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/trabzon-region-best-turkish-meatball-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/trabzon-region-best-turkish-meatball-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/trabzon-region-best-turkish-meatball.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The rolling hills of Akçaabat is where it all beings for this delicious Turkish köfte</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The making of Akçaabat köfte</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most common meat used for Akçaabat meatballs comes from lean forearm and rib meat. It’s minced then kneaded with egg, garlic, grated onion, breadcrumbs and that special blend of spices. For something so local and delicious, just honest, simple ingredients are used to let the<a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/how-to-eat-khinkali/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> quality of the meat</a> shine.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-style-default"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/akcaabat-kofte-turkey-best-meatball-1024x683.jpg" alt="Plate of Akçaabat köfte, the best Turkish meatball, served fresh and juicy in Türkiye." class="wp-image-2468" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/akcaabat-kofte-turkey-best-meatball-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/akcaabat-kofte-turkey-best-meatball-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/akcaabat-kofte-turkey-best-meatball-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/akcaabat-kofte-turkey-best-meatball.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Talk about the perfect köfte, juicy and grilled to perfection!</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Akçaabat <em>köfte</em>, as you can see, are more of a slider here in the Black Sea region. They’re formed into round, flat shapes, which is what makes them unique.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After this, the magic happens: they’re grilled over a charcoal fire until perfectly browned on the outside and irresistibly juicy inside. The result? Smoky, savoury perfection on a plate.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">These meatballs are so unique they’re recognized worldwide</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Akçaabat meatballs are officially recognized with geographic indication by the European Commission. This means that the whole life-cycle of Akçaabat <em>köfte</em> occur only within this geographic region, and nowhere else in the world. They’re made from specific cows that live and graze in a defined environment which can only be found in the geographic region of Akçaabat.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to find the best Akçaabat köfte</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re heading to Türkiye’s <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/the-underrated-turkish-dessert-hamsikoy-sutlac-turkish-rice-pudding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Black Sea region</a>, and only make it to Trabzon, make sure you taste this local <em>köfte</em>. Tucked down a set of unassuming stairs, you’ll find one of our absolute favourite local gems: Kamiloğlu Köfte.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s cozy, it’s family-run, and the <em>köfte</em>? Unbelievable. You’ll be welcomed with warm smiles, plates piled high with meat, and that unmistakable aroma of charcoal-grilled deliciousness. It’s the kind of place you leave already planning your return. Truly some of the best Turkish <em>köfte</em> in the region.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/best-turkish-meatball-turkey-1024x683.jpg" alt="Traditional Turkish meal with Akçaabat köfte, bread, grilled vegetables, and salad, showcasing the best Turkish meatball experience." class="wp-image-2469" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/best-turkish-meatball-turkey-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/best-turkish-meatball-turkey-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/best-turkish-meatball-turkey-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/best-turkish-meatball-turkey.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The spread at Kamiloğlu Köfte satisfies your most savoury cravings</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The best Turkish meatballs in Türkiye</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’re not saying Akçaabat <em>köfte</em> are the best Turkish meatballs just to entice you, they really are. From the quality of the meat, to the traditional <a href="https://www.giverecipe.com/homemade-turkish-meatballs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparation</a>, to that smoky grill finish, everything about them is pure comfort food bliss.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tasting your way through Türkiye’s <em>köfte</em> might just be the most delicious way to see the country. Each region has its own twist, and if Akçaabat is any indication, you’re in for one unforgettable (and filling) adventure.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Exploring a country and tasting your way around it… doesn’t sound like a bad reason to travel, does it?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s something magical about the Christmas season in Europe. Cobblestone streets wind through cities that have stood for centuries. Market squares become full of wooden huts, where local vendors sell their wares. The mingling smell of sweet breads and savoury meats wafts into the air. Everything that makes this part of the world so special at this time of year is why you’ll discover that the best Christmas markets are in Europe.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With so many gorgeous places to visit, deciding which European Christmas market to go to is a feat in itself. The best markets will serve up the most unique and classic local flavours of the country, most often set amongst a stunning backdrop. There, you’ll be able to peruse local artisanal crafts in a vibrant, festive atmosphere. But, if you’re looking for something a little less touristy, with a more local feel, then we’ve got just the destination for you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a multitude of Christmas fairs to experience all around Europe, we have to say Budapest, Hungary is one of the best Christmas destinations in Europe.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Budapest, Hungary: a city full of festive spirit</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the holiday season approaches, the city suddenly comes alive with the magic of Christmas. Streets glow with lights, alleyways display decorations, shopkeepers adorn their shops with trimmings, and trees sparkle with ornaments and lights. People are full of holiday cheer as the aroma of mulled wine and the sound of cheerful carols fill the air. No matter where you look, you know it’s Christmas.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If it’s your eyes that take you to the shopping, it’s your nose that will take you to the other side of the square. <h4 class="wp-block-heading">That Christmas feeling</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the evening draws in, the market comes alive with local musical performances and traditional folk dances, adding to the festive ambience. All kinds of people gather here to enjoy the feeling of Christmas, which completely radiates from the square.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://www.budapestbylocals.com/budapest-christmas-fair/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">market at <em>Vörösmarty</em></a><em> Tér</em> is larger and more spread out than the Advent Feast at the Basilica. So, if you’re looking for something a little less crowded with more space to walk around, then this is the market for you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What makes these markets so special, beyond what you can buy, is the mere act of exploring and wandering around, taking in all the sights and smells. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Advent Óbudán: the Christmas market in Old Buda</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the courtyard of <em>Fő Tér</em> in Old Buda, you’ll find one of the smaller, and undoubtedly picturesque, Christmas markets in Budapest. A little off the beaten path compared to some of the other markets, <em><a href="https://www.adventobudan.hu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Advent Óbudán</a></em> is well worth the trip to get there.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-style-default"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-Advent-Obudan-1024x683.jpg" alt="People walking down cobblestone street into Advent Obudan Christmas market surrounded by Christmas lights and wooden huts." class="wp-image-2367" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-Advent-Obudan-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-Advent-Obudan-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-Advent-Obudan-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-Advent-Obudan.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The old-world charm of Old Buda is an experience in and of itself</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">A warm welcome</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This traditional market is much more quant and less touristy than the larger Christmas markets throughout Budapest. The cobblestone streets, medieval architecture and nearby ancient ruins provide a unique setting to the festive atmosphere of the market.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you arrive, you’ll walk through a small street with local artisans displaying their unique handicrafts, distinct from the larger markets in the centre of the city. People sell all kinds of mulled wine from charming wooden huts, their warmth and inviting smells whisk through the crisp winter air.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-forralt-bor-1024x683.jpg" alt="A wooden hut with barrels of mulled wine in the foreground at one of the best Christmas markets in Europe." class="wp-image-2371" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-forralt-bor-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-forralt-bor-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-forralt-bor-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-forralt-bor.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>You can never have too much mulled wine, right?!</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you finally stroll into Fő Square, you’ll encounter a courtyard fully transformed into a Christmas paradise, aglow with shimmering lights, enriched by an enormous tree that sets the perfect stage for holiday fun. In the centre, an ice rink sparkles, while vendors surround the square, offering a variety of <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/24-best-thai-street-food-bangkok-thailand/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">local street food</a>. Meanwhile, at the corner of the square stands a large stage, offering live performances throughout the Christmas season.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-bustling-square-1024x683.jpg" alt="The square of the Advent Obudan Christmas market with tree adorned in lights, a stage with a band in the distance." class="wp-image-2370" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-bustling-square-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-bustling-square-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-bustling-square-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-bustling-square.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>This market may be small, but it packs a Christmassy punch</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The best langos</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With <em>Advent Óbudán</em> being located a little further out from the city centre, you’ll find that it has a more local feel to it than the other Christmas markets in Budapest. It’s smaller, but trust us, there’s no less Christmas cheer here. The warm welcome of the local people and the historic atmosphere of the square truly make this market a special one. There’s even a <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/where-to-eat-the-best-langos-in-budapest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">must visit <em>lángos</em> shop</a> just around the corner from here that you cannot miss if you’re in this part of the city.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For us, the local atmosphere and these hidden gems are what we live for. Of all the Budapest Christmas markets you can visit, we highly recommend taking the train for the short trip out to <em>Advent Óbudán</em>. As far as the best Christmas markets in Europe go, this is one you won’t regret visiting!</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Corvin Sétány Christmas Fair: a truly local experience</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Last, but certainly not least, is our honourable mention, the Corvin Sétány Christmas Fair. This little market can be found along Corvin Sétány, within the Corvin neighbourhood in District VIII. Most notably, it&#8217;s just outside the large Corvin Plaza shopping mall.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-wooden-huts-1024x683.jpg" alt="People standing outside of wooden huts which are selling sausage and Hungarian foods." class="wp-image-2377" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-wooden-huts-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-wooden-huts-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-wooden-huts-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-wooden-huts.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>These little local neighbourhood markets are full of Hungarian charm</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This lovely little local market along the arcade boasts a number of stalls selling handicrafts from artisans in the neighbourhood, as well as delicious local Hungarian Christmas food. Here, you’ll find cured meats, Hungarian sausage, mulled wine, strudel, <em>beigli</em>, chimney cakes, cabbage rolls and of course <em>lángos </em>(our personal favourite).</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The best Christmas markets in Europe</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best part about the Christmas season in Budapest is finding all the little markets that pop up around the city. Many of them are local for that specific neighbourhood, so aren’t advertised or well-known. The best way to find them is to do your own exploring and discover them yourself.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-hungarian-langos-1024x683.jpg" alt="Cheesy langos sitting on a table at a local Christmas market in Europe." class="wp-image-2376" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-hungarian-langos-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-hungarian-langos-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-hungarian-langos-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/best-christmas-markets-europe-local-hungarian-langos.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>If there&#8217;s lángos on offer, always say yes!</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the benefits to exploring the city for these smaller, <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/where-to-taste-best-lassi-in-mumbai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">less touristy</a> Christmas markets is the price. We tasted the <em>lángos </em>here because, well, we couldn’t resist. It was twice the size and half the price of <em>lángos</em> from the other popular Christmas fairs in Budapest! That&#8217;s a definite win-win in our books.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-left has-ast-global-color-4-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Name:</strong> Corvin Sétány Christmas Fair<br><strong>Address:</strong> Budapest, Futó u. 38, 1082, Hungary<br><strong>what3words:</strong> ///polo.announce.evenly<br><strong>Price:Entry:</strong> Free</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tips when exploring the Christmas markets in Budapest</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A few last minute tips when visiting Budapest for some of the best Christmas markets in Europe. Make sure to wander around the city. You’ll find loads of little, local Christmas markets scattered along the way. These are the true hidden gems during Christmastime.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Explore</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Explore the streets around the centre of the city in and around St. Stephen’s Basilica and Vörösmarty Square. Walk along <em>Deák Ferenc utca</em>, also known as Fashion Street by Vörösmarty Square, and <em>Zrinyi utca</em>, which leads away from St. Stephens Basilica. Both streets are full of lights and decorations, as well as a few extra stalls selling all kinds, from sweet and savoury treats to unique gifts.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Truly the best part about this time of year in Budapest, and Europe for that matter, is exploring the streets and getting into the festive spirit. Each street has something new to experience and admire. At this time of year, European cities transform completely, creating something you have to see to believe. So, get out there and roam the streets with no set destination in mind. You’ll be surprised at what you might find.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Cash or Card?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As of writing, most, if not all, of the popular markets do not accept cash; you can only pay by card. This is important to note if you’re visiting from another country. Make sure you have a good credit card or pre-paid travel credit card with no foreign exchange fees. This will make your spending experience a happier one.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Entrance</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lastly, all the Christmas markets listed are free to enter. So, it doesn’t matter what your financial situation is, you’ll be able to experience the magic of these enchanting Budapest Christmas markets no matter what.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The best Christmas markets in Europe are in Budapest</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the city transforms into a festive wonderland filled with charming markets and the most delightful aromas, it&#8217;s safe to say that Budapest truly shines during the Christmas season. From the renowned Advent Feast at St. Stephen’s Basilica, to the vibrant Vörösmarty Square Market and the quaint Advent Óbudán, each market offers a unique blend of local Hungarian foods, handcrafted gifts, and holiday cheer. These are amongst the most magical Christmas markets in Europe, and we promise you don&#8217;t want to miss them!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you explore the bustling market squares steeped in centuries of history, discovering hidden gems off the beaten path of course, you&#8217;ll find that Budapest is not just a destination at this time of year. It&#8217;s a true celebration of the magic of Christmas. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Snails are a beloved street food in the medinas of Morocco. This steamy Moroccan snail soup, known as <em>babbouche</em>, is a must try street food in any Moroccan city you can find them.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Moroccan snail soup, good for the body</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Babbouche</em> snails are served in a bowl with a spiced broth made up of over 12 spices. Amongst them you’ll find licorice root, aniseed, thyme, chilli, lavender, mustard seed, bitter orange peel and tea leaves.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not just tasty but also healthy, these spices are very good for the body. You’ll never forget this mind you, as the vendor will love to remind you of all the healing powers of this herbal soup.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_broth-1024x683.jpg" alt="Moroccan snail soup on tray with bowl of spiced broth" class="wp-image-2068" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_broth-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_broth-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_broth-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_broth.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Meaty snails served up with an extra side of spiced broth</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A steaming bowl of spiced snails</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you’ve been served your bowl of fresh Moroccan snail soup with an extra side of broth, you’ll be ready to eat.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the fun part.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ll be given a toothpick as your eating utensil. Its purpose?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To pluck your snails out with it, of course!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s by far the easiest way to eat them, and becomes a bit of game to see who has the largest snail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each meaty snail is washed down with a large gulp of spiced broth. Moroccan snail soup is perfectly balanced, with a nice warm after-burn from the ginger.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_toothpick-1024x683.jpg" alt="Moroccan snail soup in bowl snails being picked out with toothpick" class="wp-image-2070" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_toothpick-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_toothpick-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_toothpick-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Moroccan_snail_soup_toothpick.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Once you start plucking out your snails, you&#8217;ll realize what a good sized bowl this is</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to find babbouche in Morocco</h2>

In Fes, the maze of alleyways that is the medina will have a few <em>babbouche</em> stalls around. These are unmistakable by the huge nets of snails hanging on the wall behind them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you love olives so much you could eat them for <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/traditional-turkish-breakfast-the-best-breakfast-in-istanbul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breakfast</a>, lunch and dinner? Okay, so do we! Whether you’re an olive lover or not, you’ll love checking out the Great Habous Olive Market in Casablanca, <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/are-you-brave-enough-for-babbouche-moroccan-snail-soup/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Morocco</a>. Full of locally grown olives of all different colours, tastes and smells, it’s an assault on the senses.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">So many olives, your nose will find them before your eyes</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you near the <a href="https://youtu.be/BCSe3xj_sX0?si=uKtlG4SOfYGrizsu&amp;t=421" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">olive market</a>, before you even see it, the first thing you’ll experience is the smell. The pungent smell of brine will seep into your nostrils just before you see the entrance to the market. It’s a good help actually, because the market itself is tucked away off of a main street in the Habous Quarter. If you don’t keep your eyes’ peeled chances are <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/best-tlayudas-oaxaca-don-ramon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">you’ll miss it</a>!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-street-1024x683.jpg" alt="Entrance archway into the Great Habous Olive Market" class="wp-image-1640" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-street-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-street-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-street-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-street.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Your sense of smell will draw you in before your sight has a chance</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As you walk in, the first thing you’ll notice is how <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/the-best-turkish-tea-in-istanbul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quaint</a> and quiet the Great Habous Olive Market is. The courtyard is a cobblestoned area, with an unmistakable olive tree growing right in the centre. For a moment you’ll forget where you are.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-1024x683.jpg" alt="Courtyard of the Great Habous Olive Market with local seller moving barrels of olives" class="wp-image-1641" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-entrance.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The market offers a respite from the bustling streets of Casablanca</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Some of the best olives in the world</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As one of top producers of olives in the world, it has the perfect location and climate for growing olives, the Mediterranean. The olives here are packed with antioxidants and healthy fats, as well as high levels of vitamins A and E. They’re an extremely healthy snack alternative, and by far some of the best olives money can buy.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Green, brown, purple, what’s the difference?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Interestingly enough, the different colours of the olives actually refer to their ripeness, not to a specific variety.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Green olives are the unripe fruit of the olive tree. Whereas the darker coloured fruits of red and brown, all the way to purple and black, are the ripest. They’ve simply been left on the tree for a longer period of time to ripen, and therefore become much darker in colour and milder in taste.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-pruple-olives-1024x683.jpg" alt="Black green purple and marinated olives on large platters outside a stall in Great Habous Olive Market" class="wp-image-1645" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-pruple-olives-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-pruple-olives-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-pruple-olives-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-pruple-olives.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The variety of olives creates a rainbow of flavours</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Barrel upon barrel you’ll be spoilt for choice!</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you visit the Great Habous Olive Market, you’ll be <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/24-best-thai-street-food-bangkok-thailand/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spoilt for choice</a> on which olives to buy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are literally barrels and barrels of them, all preserved in different ways. Some are called raw or natural, and are unpreserved and extremely bitter, unlike any olives we’ve tasted before. Others are cured and preserved in brine or salt, giving them their distinct briny flavour that we most associate olives with.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are different colours that have been marinating in all kind of <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/top-10-sri-lankan-foods-to-eat-colombo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spices</a>. Some with whole garlic cloves, spices, chillies, hot peppers, rosemary, thyme, anything your heart can imagine, they have it. The <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/top-11-street-foods-to-eat-in-petaling-street-chinatown-kuala-lumpur/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">choices are endless</a>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-spicy-olives-1024x683.jpg" alt="Spicy marinated olives with carrots and chillies" class="wp-image-1647" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-spicy-olives-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-spicy-olives-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-spicy-olives-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-spicy-olives.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Looking for a kick? There&#8217;s spicy and all kinds for any taste</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to choose your olive seller</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our recommendation is to wander through all the different sellers to decide which olives you like the looks of the best.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We made our way to the far back left of the Great Habous Olive Market and met Abdullah, an extremely friendly seller who was full of information that he was willing to share with us about his olives and the market. He was ever so kind and let us taste as many as we wanted before deciding which ones to buy. Each one tasted so different than the last, with incredibly strong flavours.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We couldn’t leave without buying a few, or a kilo! Since Morocco is one of the top producers of olives in the world because of its Mediterranean climate, these were seriously some of the most delish olives we’ve ever had, and well-priced too!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-seller-1024x683.jpg" alt="Olive seller standing outside of his stall full of olives in Great Habous Olive Market" class="wp-image-1646" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-seller-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-seller-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-seller-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-seller.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Make sure you pay Abdullah a visit, his chatty personality and warm smile drew us in</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cost</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The price of the olives is very modest, for a whole kilo of four different kinds we paid 30 Dhs, approximately $3.75 CAD ($2.75 USD). If we could have fit more in our bags, we probably would have gotten another kilo.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The olive market is a place where both locals and tourists come to buy their olives. The vibe is lovely and quiet, and because of this you don’t feel like you’re overpaying for anything being a tourist.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-barrels-olive-1024x683.jpg" alt="Multiple barrels of olives in the Great Habous Olive Market" class="wp-image-1636" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-barrels-olive-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-barrels-olive-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-barrels-olive-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/great-habous-olive-market-barrels-olive.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>With such reasonable prices, you can get as much as you can carry</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Great Habous Olive Market is one of the top things to see in Casablanca. Not just for the olives but also for the <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/brasov-food-adventure-unexpected-surprise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">history of the area</a> its located, the Habous Quarter.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">While you’re checking out the olives, explore the Habous Quarter</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Much of the Habous Quarter, also known as the ‘New Medina’, was constructed by the French in 1916 during the French protectorate. It was built to accommodate the families of merchants from around Morocco who moved to the area at this time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many of these homes still exist today, but over the years, the area has largely become a shopping district for Moroccan goods. Here you can buy any number of things beyond even a backpack full of olives! From traditional clothes and shoes, to souvenirs and metallic goods, purses and leather, there’s a lot of shopping to be done.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re not a shopper, the area itself is beautiful even just to walk around. The French designed the area using Moroccan architecture, creating wide streets and covered sidewalks that are a pleasure to explore and get lost in. The old buildings are very picturesque and the Habous Quarter is a quiet respite compared to the hustle of Casablanca.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A must visit on your trip to Casablanca</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When exploring the Habous Quarter, one of your number one stops needs to be the Great Habous Olive Market. Whether you’re an olive lover like us, or not, it’s more than worth a stop to experience the quiet courtyard, chat with the local sellers about the olive trade, as well as escape the flurry that is Casablanca.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Who knows, you might even turn into an <a href="https://youtu.be/BCSe3xj_sX0?si=uKtlG4SOfYGrizsu&amp;t=421" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">olive lover</a>, yet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ah rice pudding, the forgotten dessert. Found all over the world in so many different cultures, it’s often replaced by more popular sweet treats, but should never be underestimated. Something so cross-cultural needs its time in the spotlight. Trabzon Turkish rice pudding, known locally<em> Hamsiköy sütlaç</em>, deserves to be centre stage.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rice pudding in Turkey, sütlaç</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turkish rice pudding, or <em>sütlaç</em>, can be found all over the country. It’s a very common Turkish dessert on many restaurants’ menus. So much so, that sometimes it’s the only dessert on there! One kind of <em>sütlaç</em> that is the rarest and most decadent of them all is <em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_sZ-KzD01o" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hamsiköy sütlacı</a></em>, found only in the Black Sea Region of Trabzon. In fact, this <em>sütlaç</em> is revered as the best in the country, and it all has to do with the cows.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-ice-cream-1024x683.jpg" alt="Turkish rice pudding with hazelnuts and fresh ice cream" class="wp-image-1181" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-ice-cream-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-ice-cream-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-ice-cream-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-ice-cream.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Hamsiköy sütlaç is up there as the best rice pudding you&#8217;ll find in Turkey</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The famous cows that make Hamsiköy sütlacı so special</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the Black Sea Region of Trabzon, <em>sütlaç</em> is made with a rare and <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/where-to-taste-best-lassi-in-mumbai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">special milk </a>known as Hamsiköy milk. The Hamsiköy cows which produce the milk have a unique habitat on top of the mountains of the Trabzon region. Wild flowers grow here in the mountain meadows and are eaten by the cows in their pastures. The addition of these wild flowers into the cows’ diets imparts an extremely unique flavour on the milk they produce.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This diet is so unique that there are no other cows which produce this special milk. Thus making Hamsiköy milk very regional in nature. Since this milk cannot be produced anywhere else, neither can the <em>sütlaç</em>, making <em>Hamsiköy sütlacı</em> a true regional specialty.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Worth travelling to the Black Sea Region just to try their sütlaç? We say yes!</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This special Turkish rice pudding is made with the simplest ingredients. Only pure Hamsiköy milk, rice, sugar, and a pinch of salt is used. Everything is put into a clay bowl where it&#8217;s baked in the oven until slightly caramelized on top. This creates an extremely thick and velvety dessert like no other.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just when you think it can’t get any better, this decadent Turkish dessert is abundantly topped with ground hazelnuts grown locally in the <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/traditional-foods-of-trabzon-gooey-kuymak-and-black-sea-hamsi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Black Sea</a> region. If you&#8217;re feeling extra sweet, you can get a scoop of fresh Hamsiköy ice cream to finish it all off.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-style-default"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-hazelnuts-1024x683.jpg" alt="Two bowls of Turkish sütlaç with hazelnuts, ice cream and two glasses of tea" class="wp-image-1180" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-hazelnuts-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-hazelnuts-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-hazelnuts-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Hamsikoy-Sutlac-with-hazelnuts.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>You can&#8217;t enjoy a creamy rice pudding without a strong Turkish tea to go with</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sütlaç is so rare it’s been given a Geographical Indication</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Hamsiköy sütlacı</em> is so unique to the region, that it’s been registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. Then, in 2017, it was given a geographical indication certificate. If that isn’t enough, the town of Hamsiköy also holds a “Hamsiköy Sütlaç Festival” annually since 2006 to promote the dessert in Turkey, as well as abroad. It’s clear to see that this Turkish rice pudding is no joke!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to go for the best Hamsiköy sütlacı in Trabzon</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best place to try out this extremely tasty Turkish dessert is at Uğur Usta Hamsiköy Sütlacı Ayasofya. Located near the Trabzon Hagia Sophia Mosque, it’s the perfect place to stop for a sweet bite. You can even do a little sightseeing afterwards or walk along the Black Sea.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What to order at Uğur Usta Hamsiköy Sütlacı</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They have a few different variations of <em>Hamsiköy sütlacı</em> to choose from, such as plain, with honey, <em>kadayif</em>, locally grown hazelnuts, or Hamsiköy ice cream. You really can’t go wrong with whatever you choose. Our recommendation? Both the hazelnuts and ice cream, decadence to the max!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a very short time during our visit to Trabzon, we discovered that Black Sea cuisine is full of mouth-watering dishes, rich in cheese and smothered in butter. For us, that’s pretty much all we need to be happy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, what food is Trabzon famous for? The Black Sea Region is home to some incredible, unique foods. If you ask any local what the top two traditional foods of Trabzon are, you’ll be met with <em>kuymak</em> and <em>hamsi</em>. The first is a buttery cheesy cornmeal ‘fondue’ (yes please!), and the latter their Black Sea anchovy. When in <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/the-underrated-turkish-dessert-hamsikoy-sutlac-turkish-rice-pudding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trabzon</a>, these dishes are must eats!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trabzon Kuymak is the ultimate high-calorie breakfast of the Black Sea</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imagine hot, melty, buttery cheese that stretches as far as your arm can reach, this my friend, is Trabzon <em>kuymak</em>. Made with three simple ingredients, cheese, butter, and cornmeal. <em>Kuymak</em> is a traditional food of Trabzon. It was invented as a high-calorie breakfast by harvesters working in the hazelnut fields. As a result, it’s usually eaten as a <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/traditional-turkish-breakfast-the-best-breakfast-in-istanbul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breakfast food</a>. But, as far as we’re concerned, something this indulgent and cheesy could be eaten any time of the day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Kuymak</em> is served with fresh Turkish <em>ekmek</em> (bread). This is to pile on the cheese, and dip in the pool of butter left behind at the end of the dish. Black Sea Cuisine is <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/where-to-taste-best-lassi-in-mumbai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">very rich</a> and full of butter, and Trabzon <em>kuymak</em> does not disappoint. It’s hard not to drool while typing…</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to eat the cheesiest, gooiest kuymak in Trabzon</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are different ‘versions’ of <em>kuymak</em> found across the Black Sea Region. The main diference being the ratio of cheese, butter and cornmeal used. One of the best places to try <em>kuymak</em> is at Cemilusta in the main town square of Trabzon city. Here, they do an amazing <em>kuymak</em> with the perfect amount of all three ingredients to get the most wonderful stringy cheese consistency. Let’s put it this way, it was so good we debated a second!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For a bit more of a local experience, there’s a wonderful place tucked away inside a building just off the main street of town. With its own private courtyard, you can enjoy an amazing <em>kuymak</em> en plein air, or inside one of its cozy rooms below.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Black Sea Cuisine straight from the Black Sea itself</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Hamsi</em>, which is Turkish for anchovy, is a famous traditional food of Trabzon. It&#8217;s found abundantly in the Black Sea Region and is very culturally significant. In fact, there are poems, folk songs, and stories all about it since it’s been a major staple of Black Sea cuisine for millennia. No wonder it’s dubbed the &#8216;prince of fish’! <em>Hamsi,</em> and fish in general, are so popular in the Black Sea Region that they’re actually consumed more than meat.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You see this as you walk through the streets of town and in any of the little local markets. Stall after stall selling an unending amount of fresh fish caught in the Black Sea that morning. Each stall home to the friendliest fishmongers I think we’ve ever come across. Nothing but smiles and warm faces greet you as you wander through.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-style-default"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-anchovy-1024x683.jpg" alt="Fishmonger cutting heads off of Black Sea cuisine anchovy hamsi" class="wp-image-1194" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-anchovy-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-anchovy-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-anchovy-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-anchovy.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Freshly caught hamsi are the go to fish in Trabzon, a taste you must try!</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Naturally, any visit to the Black Sea Region isn’t complete without trying the famous <em>hamsi</em>. The most popular way to do so is fried. The fresh <em>hamsi</em> are dipped in cornmeal and fried up in the most beautiful circular display. They’re served up perfectly crispy and decadently rich, on a plate in their own oil. Since they’re a small fish, the portion you receive is decent in size! <em><a href="https://turkishfoodie.com/hamsi-tava/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hamsi tava</a></em>, or fried anchovy, are an extremely traditional food in Trabzon that you must try when in the Black Sea Region.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-tava-fried-anchovy-1024x683.jpg" alt="Plate of hamsi tava fried anchovy in circular spiral shape" class="wp-image-1195" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-tava-fried-anchovy-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-tava-fried-anchovy-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-tava-fried-anchovy-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Turkish-hamsi-tava-fried-anchovy.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Hamsi tava (fried anchovy) come fried in corn meal, crispy and oily, the way fish is meant to be eaten</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Where to get the freshest, crispiest, plumpest hamsi in Trabzon</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The markets and stalls that are all over Trabzon sell freshly caught <em>hamsi</em> to take home to cook your own meals. The best way to have it though – in our opinion – is to go out to one of the many restaurants in the city. They will all have their catch of the day out on display and ready for your choosing. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our first choice is Balıklama Balık Lokantası. Just pick what fish you’d like, <em>hamsi</em> and the rest, and have it cooked up, fresh to order. There’s really nothing like it!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While you’re there, we highly recommend trying their fish soup. Don’t worry, they’ll remind you to try it since it’s so popular. Massive chunks of fish are served in a mildly sour, light yellow broth that’s super hearty and warms you from the inside out. Make sure you squeeze some lemon juice into it to give it a nice acidic zing.</p>

When we heard <em>khinkali</em> were that big, we were in a little <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/brasov-food-adventure-unexpected-surprise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disbelief</a>, dumplings the size of a small fist?! I don’t know about that… but when these massive Georgian soup dumplings arrived at our table, we became full on believers! Being our first time, we didn&#8217;t know how to eat <em>khinkali</em>. So, if you&#8217;re unsure like us, then this should shed some light.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What exactly are khinkali, and why are they so loved?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Khinkali</em> are considered the most popular Georgian food and one of the national dishes of the country. <em>Khinkali</em> are so popular they can be found in almost every restaurant in the country. They’re a type of extra-large dumpling that&#8217;s chock full of <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/best-restaurant-for-authentic-testi-kebab-in-istanbul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meat and spices</a>, creating a rich soup inside the dumpling. Georgian soup dumplings are differentiated by their plaited knobs of dough and <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/best-tlayudas-oaxaca-don-ramon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">giant size</a>. They’re incredibly <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/best-christmas-markets-in-europe-budapest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hearty</a>, absolutely massive, full of flavour, and are not to be underestimated.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Large-boiled-Khinkali-dumplings-1024x683.jpg" alt="Plate of large Georgian soup dumplings on table" class="wp-image-1242" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Large-boiled-Khinkali-dumplings-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Large-boiled-Khinkali-dumplings-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Large-boiled-Khinkali-dumplings-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Large-boiled-Khinkali-dumplings.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Have you ever seen a dumpling this size?!</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are Georgian soup dumplings made of?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In order to make the perfect soup <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/dong-bei-dumpling-the-best-dumplings-in-binondo-manila/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dumpling</a>, the raw meat filling of lamb, pork, <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/akcaabat-kofte-best-turkish-meatballs-in-turkiye/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beef</a>, or a combination of the last two, is formed into a ball and surrounded by raw dough. Each dumpling is sealed tight with a decent sized knob of dough left on the top. We’ll get to its purpose later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The dumpling is usually boiled or fried, and as the meat is cooked inside, this is when the magic happens. All the juice released from the meat and flavour of the spices is trapped inside the dumpling. This creates a rich and delicious soup inside the dumpling which the meat sits in, hence the name, soup dumpling!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The best part of khinkali, the soup</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Extremely important and the number one takeaway if you get anything from reading this, is that the soup inside the dumpling is the most precious part! You have to be extra careful how you eat <em>khinkali</em> and make sure that you do it the proper way. If not, you’ll lose your soup and most definitely get looked down upon by the local Georgians around you.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The most functional part of khinkali, the tail</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The top of the dumpling where the pleats meet is often called the ‘tail’ and is a large knob of dough sticking out the top. This part is the most helpful and functional part of the dumpling when it comes to eating. It acts as your ‘handle’ for holding onto so that you can be sure not to lose any precious soup. The tail is also quite tough and unappetizing, so make sure you don’t eat it! It’s strictly for functional purposes only and keeping track of who&#8217;s eating the most.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-style-default"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-Khinkali-first-knob-1024x683.jpg" alt="Khinkali held by tail to prepare for eating" class="wp-image-1234" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-Khinkali-first-knob-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-Khinkali-first-knob-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-Khinkali-first-knob-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-Khinkali-first-knob.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The first step when you eat <em>khinkali</em> is to grab them by the tail</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">It’s eatin&#8217; time; how to eat khinkali</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How do you eat Georgian soup dumplings, you ask? The proper etiquette is to grab your <em>khinkali</em> by the tail with your bare hands and turn it upside down. Then, carefully pierce the top side of it with your teeth and make a small hole. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-third-bite-1024x683.jpg" alt="Man (Chris) nibbling side of Georgian soup dumpling to suck out soup" class="wp-image-1239" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-third-bite-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-third-bite-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-third-bite-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-third-bite.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Make sure your hole is small, so you can suck out the soup without losing any of it</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From the hole, slowly sip out the hot, rich soup. Do this without the dumpling bursting open or spilling and getting all over the place! </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fourth-1024x683.jpg" alt="Man holding Georgian soup dumpling upside down with bite out of it showing meat inside" class="wp-image-1236" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fourth-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fourth-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fourth-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fourth.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Nibbling around the edges exposes the flavourful meat inside</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the soup has been devoured you can easily nibble around now and eat the dumpling and <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/best-siu-yuk-kuala-lumpur/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">juicy meat</a> inside.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fifth-soup-1024x683.jpg" alt="Man holding half eaten khinkali with meat inside visible" class="wp-image-1233" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fifth-soup-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fifth-soup-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fifth-soup-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-fifth-soup.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Being so large, Georgian soup dumplings are packed with meaty goodness</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The use of any utensil is highly advised against. Doing so in any way would pierce the dumpling on your plate, and in absolute horror, you’d lose your precious soup before getting the slightest chance to enjoy it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-sixth-knob-1024x683.jpg" alt="Man holding knob of khnikali Georgian soup dumpling upon finishing eating" class="wp-image-1238" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-sixth-knob-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-sixth-knob-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-sixth-knob-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/How-to-eat-khinkali-sixth-knob.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Don&#8217;t forget to leave that knob behind</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Khinkali of all sorts of shapes and sizes</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Depending on the region of Georgia you’re in, you’ll get <em>khinkali</em> with a different variety of <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/top-10-sri-lankan-foods-to-eat-colombo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spices</a> and fillings. Some of the most popular are <em>khevsuruli khinkali,</em> which have onions, salt, cumin, and chili pepper, and <em>kalakuri khinkali</em>, which is the more modern recipe and uses the same spices as <em>khevsuruli</em>, but with the addition of herbs such as parsley and cilantro (coriander).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Fried-Khinkali-dumplings-1024x683.jpg" alt="Plate of several large fried khinkali Georgian soup dumplings" class="wp-image-1232" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Fried-Khinkali-dumplings-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Fried-Khinkali-dumplings-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Fried-Khinkali-dumplings-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Fried-Khinkali-dumplings.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>The next best on our list are fried <em>khinkali</em>, the crispiness just hits different</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some even more modern versions of <em>khinkali</em> do away with meat all together. These have fillings of imeretian and cottage cheeses, mushrooms, mashed potato, and even a potato cheese mix. For those looking for something crispier, there’s also <a href="https://hungrytwotravel.com/where-to-eat-the-best-langos-in-budapest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deep fried</a> <em>khinkali</em>. These are one of our favourites, although they&#8217;re a little harder to come by.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Cheesy-Khinkali-dumplings-1024x683.jpg" alt="Person holding open cheese khinkali showing white cheese on the inside" class="wp-image-1230" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Cheesy-Khinkali-dumplings-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Cheesy-Khinkali-dumplings-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Cheesy-Khinkali-dumplings-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Cheesy-Khinkali-dumplings.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Honourable mention are those dumplings filled with creamy cheeses</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We even came across a <em>khinkali</em> soup with teeny tiny <em>khinkali</em> floating in the broth. So, whatever you fancy, there’s a wide range of <em>khinkali</em> for any taste and palate. Even if you’re vegetarian, there’s something for everyone.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Khinkali-soup-dumplings-1024x683.jpg" alt="Bowl of mini soup dumplings in a soup broth on table" class="wp-image-1241" srcset="https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Khinkali-soup-dumplings-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Khinkali-soup-dumplings-300x200.jpg 300w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Khinkali-soup-dumplings-768x512.jpg 768w, https://hungrytwotravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Khinkali-soup-dumplings.jpg 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>These teeny tiny <em>khinkali</em> in broth were perfect on a cold chilly day</strong></figcaption></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to order</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When out at a restaurant looking to get your <em>khinkali</em> fix, it’s important to note that one order typically means five or more of whichever type you’re looking to get. This is the case in most restaurants. Only one or two of all the places we tried allowed you to order them by piece. Something to consider when choosing the type you want, since an order of five is actually quite a decent meal considering the size of them!</p>
